Junior High School (JHS)

  Ghana JHS Form 1, 2 & 3

Junior High School (JHS) is the lower secondary level of education (typically for ages 12 to 15) and serves as the bridge between primary school and senior secondary education. JHS provides a foundational curriculum that includes core academic subjects alongside pre-technical and pre-vocational training. The program is designed to equip students with basic skills and knowledge required for further academic study or vocational training. Students follow a three-year program, at the end of which they sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The BECE is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and is used to determine eligibility for placement into Senior High Schools (SHS) or technical and vocational institutes. While the BECE covers 10 subjects, students are typically assessed in 9 subjects during their final year. These include core subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, as well as elective subjects such as ICT and a Ghanaian Language.

Senior High School (SHS)

SHS Form 1, 2 & 3

Senior High School (SHS) is the upper secondary level of education (typically for ages 15 to 18) and serves as the final stage of basic education before higher learning. SHS offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes academic coursework, technical training, and vocational education in fields such as business and agriculture. The program is designed to prepare students for university entry or professional careers. Students follow a compulsory three-year program comprising four core subjects and three to four elective subjects.
At the end of the three years, students sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This examination is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) across Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. While the WASSCE covers 32 subjects, students are typically assessed in 7 to 8 subjects during their final year. These include 4 core subjects alongside 3 or 4 optional elective subjects tailored to specific country requirements.
